Cash Register

Jake Ritty, a restuarent owner in Ohio (U.S.) was going to Europe by boat in 1879. during the voyage across, Jake came across a little machine in the engine room that counted the number of times that the ship propeller turned.

"A machine that counts"! Ritty said to himself, and immediately thought of how it could of how it could help him in his business. in fact , he was so excited by his idea that as soon as the ship reached Europe he came right back home to get work.

In a short time, with his brother's help he made a machine that added items and recorded the amount . it was the first cash register, and he put it to work in his restaurant. It made adding up bills and keeping records a great deal quicker and easier. Ritty's first cash register was hand operated . Today's registers operate by electricity. But the basic principle remains the same.
